We were commissioned to re-design the Student Data System (owned by MIS department – student services) which is arguably the most important and sensitive data held on all students attending the University. The system provides web access to their entire student record and covers payment, courses, modules undertaken, timetables and personal information.
Focus groups were established and free discussion was encouraged. This enabled us to gauge general usage of across a range of technical abilities. Secondary focus groups were under a more controlled environment where everybody responded to the same set of questions. Collaboration later moved online which was well received.
We introduced a new live activity feed to allow students to see at a glance the upcoming events applicable to them. Previously, they had to visit several pages to view this information.
We quickly identified how to improve the navigation by presenting a new tree structure delivered via an uncluttered side navigation. This enabled the University to deliver relevant key messages as news flashes in the vacant real estate at the top of the page. The feedback from the student focus groups was invaluable throughout the design process.
